The charming rudeness
I don`t understand why John Nettles has to be removed from the part of inspector Tom Barnaby. Of course, I can understand if he was ill, as I can accept any other personal reason if I listen to my rational half. But the audience isn`t rational: those who watch the Midsomer Murders, want to be thrilled, entartained and happy.
And I wasn`t happy when John Nettles was replaced by Neil Dudgeon, not because of the qualitative difference between them — from where I see it, Neil Dudgeon is a good actor who plays his role brilliantly.
I don`t understand it because John Nettles has more sense of humour than Neil Dudgeon. Tom Barnaby was intelligent, perseverent, and often even rude — and I just adored his rudeness. The scene in which he told what the price of the red wine was, or in which he asked from a young and handsome man how he manages his relation with an older woman, or in which he thanked to Jones that he said Tom`s phone number to "Wonderboy", were all scenes that I simply watch with thrill.
Why? Because I think that we are either too polite to talk from our soul, from ourselves. We only talk about what is allowed by our status. Anyway, Neil Dudgeon`s character is more mannered than his "nephew's". And I think we were enchanted, and for good reason, by a spontaneous and clever chief inspector.
